  • Therapeutic Options

Background
The 16th Danish Cancer Society Symposium focuses on the mechanisms involved in cancer invasion and how we can use this knowledge to develop new therapeutic concepts and identify additional biomarkers. The topics that will be discussed are:

  • The proteolytic activity required for cancer cells to invade the surrounding tissue and the different roles of proteases, including redundancy.

  • The tumour microenvironment that is decisive for tumour development and establishment of organ-specific metastases.

  • Biomarkers which can aid in cancer diagnosis, in prognosis and prediction of response to a specific treatment.

  • Imaging based on proteases and other molecules involved in cancer invasion; in vivo localization of tumours and metastases.

  • New therapeutic options emanating from the knowledge on the proteases involved in cancer invasion and on the molecular pathways that play crucial roles for tumour growth and invasion.

Extracellular proteolysis will be a main theme to discuss at the symposium. The proteases and their degradation of the extracellular matrix and the tumour microenvironment are important for cancer invasion and metastasis. The understanding of these processes is a prerequisite for the development of new therapeutic options such as specific targeting of a protease. Many of the proteases, their receptors and inhibitors are useful biomarkers that can both contribute to diagnosis and aid in the selection of patients in need of adjuvant therapy.

Primary tumours and metastases can be visualized in a non-invasive way using imaging probes binding to components relevant for invasive processes. Because changes in the levels of the relevant proteins occur before diseases reach an advanced stage, molecular imaging probes could make an earlier diagnosis possible and enable a precise localization of tumour and metastases for the benefit of cancer patients.

Applications
Participation is free of charge, but only a maximum of 40 participants will be accepted, incl. PhD students, post doctoral fellows and senior scientists.

Researchers from the Danish research environment within this field are especially encouraged to apply.

Please motivate your application (in English) and include a short CV and publication list. It is compulsory that PhD students include a recommendation from your Supervisor/Head of Department and an abstract (in English). Other participants are furthermore encouraged to submit an abstract on their scientific work to be published in an abstract book.

Please send the above to symposium@cancer.dk.
