Report on the sun habits of the Danes, prior to the ‘Reduce Your Sun’ campaign 2007 |
|
SUMMARY
Full report published in Danish by the Danish Cancer Society and TrygFonden
Sunburn is common – especially among young people
The sun survey concludes that 39% of respondents had been sunburnt during the past 12 months. Among 15-34 year olds, 54% had been sunburnt during the past 12 months. 18% of respondents stated that they used every opportunity they could to sunbathe in the summer of 2006. Among 15-17 year olds, this figure doubled to 36%. Respondents with a sensitive skin were more often sunburnt than others.
Attitudes towards the sun are grounded in childhood experience
Respondents who stated that they had been sunburnt as children, were more sunburnt as adults. Those who had not been sunburnt as children were not sunburnt as adults.
Attitudes towards sun protection
Only 41% of respondents use a sun hat. Among women this figure is only 35%. However, women are better at using sun screen. 86% of women stated that they protect themselves using sun screen between 12 and 3pm compared with only 70% of men. 64% of respondents stated that they use sun screen to prolong the time they spend in the sun.
Young people sunbathe and use sunbeds more frequently than the rest of the population
Young people sunbathe more frequently compared with older age groups and mostly in the period between 12 and 3pm. Over half of young people in the survey had used a sunbed during the past 12 months compared to 25% of the total respondents who had used a sunbed. This group was not aware of the effect of the sun on the skin’s ageing process.
In general, knowledge of the ageing effect of UV exposure and the protective effect of sun screen was lacking among respondents.
