Psychological Aspects of Cancer

Group leader: Pernille Envold Bidstrup

The Psychological Aspects of Cancer research group wishes to improve the quality of life and reduce symptom burden for cancer patients and their families.

Twenty years ago, the psychosocial needs of cancer patients were completely unrecognized. We aim to draw attention to the unrecognized needs of cancer patients, families and informal caregivers of cancer patients, with the perspective that e.g. support for patients and caregivers will be an inherent part of the cancer trajectory.

The first step is to document the needs of vulnerable patients and relatives who if left unattended may suffer long-term social and psychological consequences. The second step is to develop supportive care interventions targeting both physical and psychosocial symptoms in cancer patients and their families paying strong attention to move the supportive care into an area of strong methodological rigor with manualized theory based interventions tested in randomized controlled design.
